As always, thank you again for your support of the Red Cross!

We completely understand the ever-changing situation in regards to the COVID-19 outbreak. It has drastically been affecting the nation’s blood supply as the Red Cross canceled 2700 blood drives over the past week due to coronavirus concerns. This translates into over 86,000 uncollected units of blood.

Our blood supplies were at Urgent Levels before we started having blood drives canceling.  We are looking at a possible emergency level shortage of blood products if we continue to lose blood drives.

I wanted to share a few of the additional procedures the Red Cross began implementing to protect the safety of our donors and volunteers:

  • Every Red Cross employee is required to check their temperature prior to coming to work; if it’s above 99.5 degrees, they are not allowed to come to work. Employee's temperatures are checked again prior to entering a blood drive location, and if it’s 99.5 degrees, they will not be allowed to enter the facility.
  • Every blood donor, volunteer or any individual coming into a blood drive location, is required to get a temperature check, and the same protocol as above is implemented.
  • Every blood donor entering a drive will be asked to use hand sanitizer prior to touching any of the equipment – this includes our check-in computer and health history computers.
  • Volunteers working at the blood drives are being required to use hand sanitizer and wear latex gloves the duration of time they are working at a blood drive.
  • Collections staff members are following even more strenuous cleansing of all equipment, using additional hand sanitizer more often, and additional temperature checks in the duration of the blood drive

Thank you again for all your support and please let me know if I can provide any additional information or answer any questions.
